Updates From the Trail

It has now been one month since July 6th when Jeremy declared his candidacy for the Democratic nomination in the 2010 Alabama Treasurer’s election.

In the last month, Jeremy has been traveling Alabama, listening to the concerns of Alabamians concerning the Treasurer’s office. Thus far, Jeremy has actively participated in events in six counties.

Heard From You

There are several recurring concerns that I hear from voters while on the campaign trail. Namely, concerns regarding the management of Alabama’s Prepaid Affordable College Tuition Program (PACT), the health of local banking, and the health of existing industries are mentioned most frequently.

I’ve attended Save Alabama PACT meetings in Madison, Morgan, Limestone and Montgomery counties. In these meetings, I’ve met and spoken to more than 500 PACT families, students, and concerned citizens. I’ve expressed my support for upholding Alabama’s contractual obligations of PACT. However, I’ve also cautioned against acting hastily, making Alabama’s state financial situation worse and not providing a sufficient solution to PACT.

Presently, considering PACT assets and yearly disbursements at today’s tuition rates, PACT is solvent for approximately another ten years, though its obligations reach until 2030.

Alabama must first ensure PACT families that the state will honor its contractual obligations to all 48,000 families. Then, the state should take action, in an unhasty fashion, towards constructing a long term fix for PACT.

Support of local and community banks will be a focus of a Sherer Treasury administration. Unlike the previous seven years, I fully intend to utilize the power of the Treasury to support local banks that are good corporate citizens, and who invest within Alabama businesses – particularly in rural and underserved communities.

Families who speak to me say they are tired of bailing-out out of state banks that do not invest or support the best interests of their community and its businesses. I tell these families that I too believe that Alabama’s best investment is within itself, and I will not invest taxpayer dollars in banks that are not committed Alabama, its businesses or its workers.

Each community I visit, and each person that I listen to, I hear about their loss of trust and confidence in Alabama’s Treasury. My most immediate goal as Treasurer is to regain the public’s confidence, by acting honestly, openly, competently. My overall mission as Treasurer is to competently manage Alabama’s investments, increase Alabama’s economic capital, and strengthen our local socio-economic fabric.
